Who holds power in today’s food systems—and how is it being challenged?
The Power and Resistance in the Food System webinar series, hosted by the UNESCO Chair on Food, Biodiversity explores the structures of power that shape global and regional food systems and the many forms of resistance that are emerging in response.
From corporate consolidation and extractive models of production to policy-driven marginalization of Indigenous and agroecological practices, food systems today reflect deep inequalities. But communities, grassroots movements, and research partnerships are pushing back. They are advancing alternative visions rooted in justice, biodiversity, sovereignty, and sustainability.
This series kicked off in May 2025 and featured leading scholars Molly Anderson, Jennifer Clapp, and Haroon Akram-Lodhi. Drawing on their recent publications—Titans of Industrial Agriculture (Clapp, 2025) and Transforming Food Systems: Narratives of Power(Anderson, 2024) the conversation explored the consequences of concentrated power and illuminated leverage points for change. Discussant Akram-Lodhi brought a global lens to these dynamics, highlighting possibilities for transformation in the face of complex political and economic shifts.
