About Us

The Interdisciplinary Research Institute for Mathematical and Statistical Modelling in Scientific Discovery, Innovation and Sustainability (MS2Discovery) strives to create a dynamic and engaging environment that is highly conducive to interdisciplinary research, collaboration, and communication. Having a broad and pervasive involvement in both research and education, the Institute is active in its promotion of synergetic developments involving mathematical and statistical modelling by stimulating exciting new research and projects via important interdisciplinary problems motivated by other disciplines, industry, public policies and developments in society. The Institute devotes its efforts to interdisciplinary projects that support three main pillars:

  • fundamental and applied research in sciences,
  • innovative technologies in industry and business, economics and finance, and
  • the development and applications of mathematical and statistical modelling to global issues of sustainability.
It serves as a platform for enhancing the research experience of faculty, students, post-doctoral fellows, and visiting scholars and for increasing the social awareness of the key role played by mathematical and statistical modelling in our society.

MS2Discovery is also located in the centre of Canada's Technology Triangle. The institute is surrounded by excellent infrastructure – in close proximity to many world-renowned high-tech companies, and a short drive from Toronto, the largest city in Canada. As a result, members have access to some of the most powerful supercomputer facilities in Canada via the Shared Hierarchical Academic Research Computing Network (SharcNET). SharcNET is an integral part of the national HPC platform for research, Compute Canada. The institute is also connected to ORION, Ontario's ultra-fast fibre optic network that supports and facilitates research, education, collaboration and innovation.

Experimental Labs and Infrastructure

Several members rely on experimental facilities and computational infrastructure for their research, including:

We have access to high RAM computers for visualization. We also developed in-house packages such as MULTIBAND-NANO, MTEI-LDN, and SCBP-QDs for complex problems in nanoscience and nanotechnology, as well as ISO-SMA for three-dimensional isogeometric analysis of complex materials with memory. Through SharcNET, we have access to GAUSSIAN, ADF, NAMD, LAMMPS, DLPOLY, ESPRESSO, TINKER, as well as MOLDEN and VMD for visualization of complex data. SharcNET also provides laboratory licences for Finite Element and other software for scientific and engineering applications.
