Employment

Student employees are the backbone of all our programs. PhD students run our publications, outreach programs, social media accounts, archives, podcast, and website. The LCSC routinely hires MA and undergraduate students to assist PhD-student managers in these activities and others.

Student employees gain paid experience in areas like community engagement, digital and print media production, editorial work, web design, event organization and project management.

Our PhD positions include:

  • Archives Manager – handles research requests, manages acquisitions, digitization, and collection storage for the LMH Archive and Robert Vogel Library.
  • Outreach Manager – liaises with community partners, organizes and oversees virtual and in-person lecture series.
  • Podcast Producer – hosts, records and produces the On War & Society podcast, and manages the Centre’s podcast studio.
  • Publications Manager – managing editor of Canadian Military History, works with authors and university presses on book series and other Centre publications.
  • Social Media Manager – oversees the Centre’s outreach and advertising on social media.
  • Web Editor – manages content on the Centre’s websites and works with content-creators for the Centre’s blog.

Copp Scholars

The Copp Scholars program employs up to 20 Laurier undergraduates per year, pairing them with LCSC faculty associates as research assistants. Students and faculty are paired according to interests and skill-sets, not disciplines, meaning both professor and student get the chance to draw on perspectives, skills and expertise not necessarily associated with their own field.

“The Copp Scholar program has provided me with outstanding opportunities to pursue research in a field I hope to have a career in after graduation. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed developing my interpersonal skills, communication abilities, and leadership qualities!”

Keegan GingrichKeegan Gingrich - 2021 Copp Scholar

"Working with the LCSC provided me with a unique opportunity to develop a relationship with an experienced researcher, and the chance to hone my research skills heading into the first year of my Masters program. I loved working with the Centre, and I am very grateful for the academic skills and connections that I have made!"

Samantha ZaniVictoria Wang - 2021 Copp Scholar

“I had an amazing experience at the Centre working on two projects: a research project on the Cold War nuclear bunker in Kitchener, Ontario, and a research project on Canadian Foreign Policy in Africa in the 1960s. I gained a lot of historical knowledge and developed skills in researching in a historical context while growing professionally. The members of the Centre and my supervisors were, and still are, extremely supportive and kind. I look forward to another incredible year at the Centre!”

Keegan GingrichFiona McGee - 2021 Copp Scholar

"During my time as a Copp Scholar I worked with Dr. Alistair Edgar, researching and studying all the past presidents of the United Nations General Assembly. I not only learned more about the United Nations as an organization, but my time in the program taught me how to research more effectively and gave me the tools to analyze and understand data successfully."
