Nelson Mandela Essay Award

Each year, the Tshepo Institute awards the Nelson Mandela Academic Excellence Award for Social Justice in recognition of academic excellence.  

  • The winner will receive a prize of $300 and a Laurier certificate of excellence. 
  • The award will be presented at the Nelson Mandela Public Lecture, two of which are held annually in Brantford.


Tshepo invites essays or other written assignments on any topic that addresses contemporary development, human rights, and social justice issues in Africa or in global south in general. 

Essays and assignments written for course work are welcomed. 

Potential topics may include but are not limited to: Politics, Food, Hunger, Health, Education, Governance, Democracy, Human Rights, Leadership, Economic and Social Development. 

Eligibility: This competition is open to all undergraduate students currently enrolled at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Submission Instructions: The student’s name, e-mail address, and department or program of enrolment should appear on the first page of the essay only, and all other identifiers should be removed.  Please include the note TSHEPO Academic Excellence Award in the subject line of your email.
