April 11 - Migrant Resilience and Gender Responsiveness Event
Please join the International Migration Research Centre (IMRC), the Building Migration Resilience in Cities Partnership (BMRC), and the Balsillie School of International Affairs (BSIA) on April 11th for a day of events focusing on migrant resilience and gender responsiveness. Events will be held at the BSIA and are open to all, but please register separately below for the workshop and panel.
From 8:30 am-4:15 pm we will hold a workshop titled "Fostering Gender Responsiveness in Migration: Resilience, Research and Action." The workshop will focus on strategies and challenges to fostering resilience among temporary migrants, international students, and refugee claimants. It will bring together migration researchers and representatives of community organizations from Kitchener-Waterloo, Toronto, Windsor, Ottawa, and Montreal.
The workshop will include a light lunch featuring a keynote lecture, “Some Gendered Aspects of Migration: Resilience of Indian Nurses Abroad,” by Dr. Marie Percot (Centre national de la recherche scientifique, France). Dr. Percot will discuss the gendered aspects of step-by-step migration of nurses from India, highlighting and analyzing the ways young women cope with the challenges they face while living far from home. This lunch and lecture is sponsored by the French Embassy in Canada’s Saint-Simon Initiative.
Please register for the workshop and lunch.
From 5:30-7:00 pm in the CIGI auditorium we will host a panel titled "Building Resilient Communities: Responding to the New Realities of Newcomer Trajectories in Canadian Cities," featuring representatives of community organizations and researchers who will share their experiences of challenges, crises, and change in relation to migration. Panelists include Ana Luz Martinez (KW Multicultural Centre), Peter Donahue (Laurier International), Rana Aljaroudi (Canadian Arab Women’s Association), and Fran Hannigan (University of Waterloo). Tara Bedard (LIP Chair/KW City Network BRMC) will facilitate discussion. Jenna Hennebry (Laurier) and Valerie Preston (York) will provide opening and closing remarks. The evening will wrap up with a reception in the CIGI lobby.
